Q&A: Learner drivers on L plates

It is legal to tow a trailer
with horses in this situation, as long as you are accompanied by a passenger
who holds a suitable licence and you display “L” plates. However, it could well
produce habits that could lead to failing any test.
There is a specific requirement
in the test that you should make “good headway”. In other words you should
drive up to, but not exceed, any set speed limits. It is natural for any horse
owner to drive slower and brake earlier and more gently. While this is
commendable for your horse’s welfare, driving in this manner would almost
certainly lead to failure in the towing test.
There are many good trailer
driving schools around the country who will get you through the test in a
matter of days. A quick look on the internet or a call to the caravan club will
give you the information you need.
